Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Schiphol Group's core activity in the Netherlands is the operation of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In 2006, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol served 47.8 million passengers, transported 1.61 million tonnes of cargo and handled 435.973 air transport movements (scheduled and charter flights).

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is Europe's fifth largest airport in terms of passenger numbers, fifth in air transport movements, and the third largest in terms of cargo volume.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the oldest international airport in the world still to be situated in the same location where the first aircraft landed on 19 September 1916. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is also one of the lowest lying airports in the world. It is situated in a polder, which was reclaimed between 1848 and 1852, at 4.5 metres below sea level. Since 1980, the airport has been awarded more than 140 international prizes as one of the best airports in Europe, and even in the world.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is Schiphol Group's flagship enterprise. It is here that the AirportCity concept is at its most advanced stage of development. The experience and expertise acquired here are used to apply this concept to other airports.

Due to its extensive network of transport links, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is regarded as one of the four 'hubs' or main ports of Europe. In the summer of 2007, passengers and cargo could fly from Schiphol directly to 269 destinations in 90 countries. These services are provided by more than 100 scheduled airlines. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the home base of KLM and one of the two hubs of the SkyTeam alliance involving Air France KLM.
